When Do I Need To Have A Scoutmaster Conference?
You are ready for a Scoutmaster Conference for advancement once you have completed all of the requirements (except for Scout Spirit, Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review) for your next rank and they have been signed off by an authorized Scout. The Scoutmaster Conference is a get together between the Scoutmaster and the Scout after he completes all of the requirements for rank and before the board of review is scheduled. The Scoutmaster conference determines if the Scout is ready to go before a board of review. It is also an important component of one of the missions of Scouting, which is the association with adults.
To Schedule a Scoutmaster Conference, contact the Scoutmaster either via phone or in person at the next troop meeting. The Scoutmaster will then arrange a time either at a troop meeting or outside of a troop meeting to meet with you. This conference is a valuable opportunity for a Scoutmaster to discuss each Scout’s activity within the troop, his understanding and practice of the ideals of Scouting and to see if the troop is meeting his needs. Topics can include:
- Review and talk about the Scout’s progress in the troop.
- Ask how he defines Scout Spirit and lives according to the Scout Oath and Law in his everyday life.
- Check to see how much fun he is having.
- Determine if he’s having any problems in his patrol, the troop, school or home that could affect his Scouting experience.
- Ask how he has demonstrated leadership within his patrol or the troop.
The Scout should come to this conference in full field uniform and be ready to review any of the requirements for the new rank. The Scoutmaster can retest the Scout during this review. Once the Scoutmaster is satisfied that the Scout is ready, he will sign off on his handbook and direct him to sign up for a board of review.
Because a conference is designed to provide direct give and take between the Scout and the Scoutmaster, for both the Scout's good and the good of the troop, a Scoutmaster conference can also take place when a Scoutmaster senses that a Scout needs a conference or if the Scout asks for one. Some reasons to have a Scoutmaster conference for things other than advancment include:
- A Scout's lack of advancement or drop in participation
- A perceived trouble between a Scout and others in his troop.
- A certain event at the last campout or troop meeting.
