The Scout Badge and Boy Scout Ranks

This is the initial status of a Scout after he is registered with the troop, has submitted all of the required paperwork, and has demonstrated some basic knowledge about Boy Scouts.

   Scout Requirements Study Guide

Basic ranks – Tenderfoot, 2nd Class and 1st Class.

These ranks focus on teaching Scout skills and preparing the Scout for leadership in the troop. This is where a Scout will gain a solid grounding in skills in the outdoors, physical fitness, citizenship, patrol and troop participation and personal development. This is where the Scout learns to take care of themselves and others in the outdoors. BSA and Troop 318 strongly encourages boys to reach the 1st Class rank by the end of their first year of Scouting.  Requirements for all three ranks may be worked on at the same time, but the ranks must be earned in order upon completion of the previous rank.

Advanced ranks – Star, Life and Eagle.

Here the focus of advancement switches from Scouting skills to personal development and community service.  These ranks focus on active participation, holding a leadership role within the troop, earning merit badges (a certain number and type are reqired at each rank), taking part in service projects and living the Scout Oath and Law in your everyday life.

Rank Advancement follows these basic steps:

  1. All requirements for the rank (except for Scout Spirit, Scoutmaster Conference and the Board of Review) are completed by the Scout
  2. The Scout contacts the Scoutmaster via phone or in person to schedule a Scoutmaster Conference to evaluate the Scout’s progress and to discuss the rank that he is working towards.
  3. Once the Scoutmaster has signed off on the requirements for Scout Spirit and the Scoutmaster Conference, then the Scout signs up for a Board of Review with the on the troop bulletin board for the next scheduled time. The Advancement Chair and 2-3 committee members evaluate the Scout’s and the troop’s progress to see if the Scout is ready to attain the rank that he has been working towards.
  4. Upon passing the Board of Review, the Scout is presented his rank badge.
  5. A Troop Court of Honor is held 3-4 times per year to formally recognize all Scouts for their rank advancements, merit badges and other awards.
